How is the date set in France?

The Islamic calendar follows the moon: each month begins with the appearance of the new crescent and lasts 29 or 30 days. The Hijri year is therefore about ten days shorter than the solar year, and Ramadan comes around eleven days earlier every year.

In France, the Grand Mosque of Paris gathers its religious committee on the evening before, the Night of Doubt, to announce the start and the end of the month. The French Council of the Muslim Faith (CFCM) publishes its own date, based on astronomical calculations. The two usually agree, but not always: in 2026, the first day of Ramadan was announced as Wednesday 18 February by the Grand Mosque of Paris and as Thursday 19 February by the CFCM.

The dates on this page are therefore forecasts, confirmed at the start of each month concerned: a one-day shift is still possible.
